The American Kennel Club’s Canine Good Citizen (CGC) Program is widely recognized as the gold standard for dogs demonstrating good manners at home and in the community. Often serving as a stepping stone toward therapy or comfort dog work, the CGC program emphasizes both responsible dog ownership and practical real-world skills for dogs.
This class is ideal for friendly dogs who already have a solid foundation of basic manners and are ready to build greater confidence, focus, and reliability in public settings.
Over the course of this 6-week program, teams work on polishing all ten skills required to pass the AKC Canine Good Citizen evaluation, including:
- Calm behavior around people and dogs
- Polite leash walking
- Handling and grooming acceptance
- Reliable basic manners
- Confidence in everyday situations
- Focus and composure in distracting environments
At the conclusion of the class, participants may elect to complete the official AKC CGC evaluation with Corey, an AKC-approved CGC Evaluator. Dogs that successfully pass the test are recognized through the AKC CGC program and may continue on toward therapy/comfort dog work or simply enjoy the accomplishment of becoming a well-mannered community companion.
Why Get the CGC Certification
For many owners, the CGC program is about much more than a title. It’s about building communication, trust, confidence, and connection between dogs and the people who love them.
For those interested in therapy or comfort dog work, this class is often the first step toward joining that world.
